over the last decade, bantam lions (aka liverpool producer mike carney) has devoted much of his spare time to �playful experimentation,� channeling 30 years of musical inspirations and adventures to create electronic music that sits somewhere between hazy nostalgia and far-sighted futurism. now, he�s gathered together some of his favourite moments to create short stories, a debut album � and scenery�s first long-form release � simply overflowing with page-turning musical narratives.
these are short stories to savour, to get lost in, and to revisit time and time again. they�re bantam lions� stories, but he�s happily shared them for others to enjoy.

the europe-centered techno scene might be thinking: where is techno in a city as vast, dynamic and electric as new york? it�s alive and well, and keeps growing through aptly-named new york trax. founded in 2016 and based in brooklyn, new york trax is an outlet for new york music, by new york artists, in new york city. new york trax 02 was written by boris brenecki (ontal, impulse controls), who has recently relocated to new york, starting a new chapter in his life and artistic career. this record is the very first material he produced in new york, heavily inspired by the city and its people. �the oven�, with its continuous filthy groove intensified by metallic percussions, is a serious candidate for an instant classic and a deadly weapon when used on a dancefloor. the grittiness of �the oven� was depicted through images of the less beaten paths of new york in a well-received official video published recently by the label. dark yet insanely dynamic �transit system�, based on field recordings of the new york city subway, opens with a bang the b side of the record, followed by �strictly hardcore�, a sonic manifesto of brutality. get it while it�s hot!

blawans new side project bored young adults is up next on will bankheads label the trilogy tapes. the shy dancers on bungalowdorf beach features some restrained and slow burning techno experiments that differ from jamie roberts more usual hard-hitting sounds. the seething title track treads the same path as kassem mosse or vactrol park. the fentanyl techno of but we need this bench sounds like an old regis record played on 8, while devoted fans of the young uk producers sound will get something a bit more familiar on the menacing hypnotic techno grinder check up from the neck up.

the maghreban returns with essential new house odyssey �brooklyn�, named after his dead cat. his second outing on black acre, �brooklyn� is a breathtaking night flight, viewed through a prism both phantasmagorical and seedily terrestrial. trance inducing caribbean percussion, possessed chants, motown bass, sci-fi synths, wayward filter sweeps, analogue free jazz - all get their moment to shine in the weird and wonderful 8-minute microcosm that is �brooklyn�. flip-side �the carpenters� strikes a more domesticated tone, with motorik industrial dub eventually giving way to haunted sci-fi bachelor pad lounge.

after the sweat-soaked throwback fervour of his 2015 debut lp, unknown to the unknown and hot haus main man dj haus returns to rinse for a brand new 10-track album, �artificial intelligence�. working at a formidably high rate of productivity, haus returns with this new record less than 12 months after his last, and he shows no signs of slowing down, maintaining his reputation for creating hard-edged dance anthems that leave a lasting effect on the dancefloor.

hailing from boston and steeped in the flamboyance and fabulousness of the golden age of disco, saucy lady lives up to her name on this record for street muzik. previous outings with rahaan and more recently on star creature and tugboat editions attest to the quality she attaches her alluring vocal delivery to. -emotion- comes in three different mixes to give the dj a few options. whether you plump for the instrumental or the extended mix, the infectious musicality sewn into the jam can t help but get under your skin, although it s saucy s honey-coated voice that seals the deal on this 12-.

the erefora land is the first solo record by johan kaseta, lehult founding member. its a nostalgic, hazy affair where the tracks work both on a dancefloor and as the score to an imaginary super nin-tendo rpg. squelching vocal samples (hi!) and bubbling synths are reminiscent of the oldschool, synth-laden nineties game soundtracks young kaseta still cant get enough of. the erefora land is like coming across the soundtrack to earthbound after having forgotten to have ever played it - suddenly a rush of sights, sounds and smells from the past come back to you and gently pull you in.

b side starts off with �calypso�, one of the earliest x-coast productions - a steady house groove made from layers of keys, trumpet stabs, rich with hats and ghost snares - perfect to get the party started. being the last track, �don�t stop� is a hidden gem of this ep - what seems to be a hawaiian steel guitar classic, quickly transforms into a floor stomper, it�s a house beat reinforced by a classic rolling break, hammond stabs and samples of sterling void & paris brightledge�s �it�s all right�.

after three years and ten eps, amsterdam s will & ink label offers up its first full length from label favorite yaleesa hall and is called woodall. it explores texture, space and sound design in fascinating ways. since 2014 yaleesa hall has released four eps on the label and has become known for breakbeat laced stripped-down techno. this debut album finds the producer indulging a less dance floor focussed version of his sound, and one that is better suited to the full length format. explaining that his tracks most often start as -sound structures and experiments- that then get reworked for the club, here they stay closer to their original forms. woodall is sound sculpture that is electronic and synthetic but also made of real world sounds that are all truly absorbing. comes in gatefold sleeve.

�here come the horns� is the second studio album by the hip hop group delinquent habits. formed in east los angeles in 1991, the group are known for their latin-tinged rap, which is both melodic and hardcore. their first self-titled album movlp1338 was executive produced by cypress hill member sen dog and featured guest appearances by sen himself as well as puerto rican new york city rapper hurricane g.

argot excavates an unexplored corner of chicago house history. lab work 91-96 collects the work of chris ike and john kardaras, two chicago producers with few records to their names but a wealth of compelling unreleased material waiting in their archives. the compilation highlights the pair�s particular vision and musical breadth across 14 tracks, drawn from a cd-r given to steve mizek in 2010 that was recently rediscovered. lab work was remastered in it�s entirety by dietrich schoenemann, sounding much at home today yet intimately connected to a formative time in chicago house history.
